Persistent wet weather over recent days has resulted in elevated water levels on the River Suir, with overtopping occurring at several points along the riverbank.
Tipperary County Council’s Flood Protection and Maintenance Teams, working closely with the OPW, have been active throughout the week to ensure the full readiness and performance of the Clonmel Flood Protection System. The scheme is operating as designed and continues to provide essential protection to the town.
How the System Is Managed
The flood protection system operates on a rolling 12‑month inspection and maintenance schedule. Current preparatory and operational activities include:
- Inspection and maintenance of earth bunds and embankments to ensure structural integrity
- Testing of flood barriers and associated components
- Servicing and operational checks on pumping stations
- Inspection of non‑return valves and storm sewer lines to prevent backflow during high river stages
- Clearing trash screens, fish passes, manholes, and gullies to ensure free movement of water
- Verifying communications and essential contacts to support coordinated response operations
Ongoing Monitoring
Staff continue to monitor:
- River Suir levels
- Rainfall forecasts
- Performance of the wider drainage network
Teams remain ready to respond should conditions require additional interventions.
Road closures are in place at:
- Old Bridge, Clonmel. Diversion on R671 & R884 & R707
- Convent Road. Diversion on R671 & R884
