"THROUGH OUR EYES, THE WORLD WE SEE"
An exhibition of work produced from young people in Cashel, Co. Tipperary.
In collaboration with Tipperary Arts Office and Tipperary Rural Traveller Project Residency Programme 2024/ 2025, led by Artist and Educator Francesca Hutchinson
This work seeks to create a meaningful shared experience that celebrates Traveller heritage and perspectives.
Led by traveller artist Francesca Hutchinson, the residency began in late 2024 and engaged a group of young people in exploring themes of growth and freedom. Inspired by Francesca’s Movements of Growth (LSC, 2023), particularly A Pattern of the Old Life Reimagined for a Modern One- a piece incorporating cotton thread, scrim, hazel and pine wood, and cotton canvas- participants attended a series of creative workshops over an extended period of time that introduced materials and techniques such as embroidery and drawing with thread, culminating in a collaborative piece rooted in Traveller craftmanship.

The production of this exhibition “THROUGH OUR EYES, THE WORLD WE SEE” invited young people to create work inspired by their lived experiences, inspirations, influences and motivations.
Throughout the artist residency the young people experimented with techniques such as embossing, embroidery and drawing with thread. The young people then applied the skills and techniques learned to collaborate on designing two large scale tapestries.
The development of this work provided the young people with opportunities to control their learning which supported them to become independent thinkers with a refined sense of autonomy.
The longevity of this artist residency ensured that a safe space could be created and sustained, thus enabling all participants to develop a deeper understanding of their identity, and to engage in opportunities to express their voice and translate this through visual art.
